A practical pathway beyond ATAR
ATAR is one university-entry pathway, but it is not the only way a young person can prepare for life beyond secondary education. IDEA helps students build a purposeful portfolio of recognised learning, practical experience, professional connections and evidence of what they can do.
The pathway is personalised around each student’s interests and goals. University admission always depends on the course and provider, so the team works with students to understand current entry requirements and build an appropriate plan.
What a non-ATAR pathway can include
Students work towards nationally recognised qualifications delivered in partnership with registered training providers. These credentials build practical and transferable skills and may contribute to future study or employment pathways.
Students build a personalised portfolio containing project work, credentials, references and examples of what they can do. It provides more context than a list of subjects alone.
Depending on the student's plan and availability, work experience, volunteering, industry projects, job shadowing and other opportunities can help them test interests and build professional confidence.
IDEA mentors help students map possible destinations, identify requirements and adjust their pathway plan as their interests and goals become clearer.
Some students may prepare for university through vocational qualifications, enabling programs, university units or other approved pathways. Entry requirements vary by institution and course and should always be checked directly.

Where can a non-ATAR pathway lead?
A strong pathway is designed backwards from the student’s destination rather than around a single ranking score.
University
Depending on the course and provider, students may use vocational qualifications, enabling programs, university units or other approved entry pathways. Admission is not automatic.
TAFE and further training
Students can progress into higher-level vocational study, specialised training or industry credentials connected with their interests and intended career direction.
Work and enterprise
Employment, apprenticeships, traineeships, freelancing and new ventures can form part of a pathway supported by practical experience, references and a professional portfolio.
HOW IDEA SUPPORTS THE TRANSITION
A full-time program built around the next step
IDEA is an alternative to mainstream schooling for senior-secondary-aged students. It is not a registered school and does not provide an ATAR or WACE. Instead, students participate in a full-time vocational program supported by co-learning days, flexible learning experiences and regular mentoring.
