A supported step beyond home education
Home education can give a young person valuable flexibility and autonomy. As the senior-secondary years approach, some families begin looking for added structure, a consistent peer community, recognised qualifications or clearer pathways into further study and work.
IDEA offers a full-time vocational alternative for young people who want personalised learning alongside mentors and peers in a co-learning environment. It is not a registered school, and it feels different from both a traditional classroom and learning entirely at home.
What families may be looking for
Students work alongside other young people in collaborative hubs, take part in community activities and build relationships over time.
Regular coaching and check-ins help students manage projects, monitor progress, develop wellbeing goals and make decisions about future pathways.
Students work towards nationally recognised qualifications delivered in partnership with registered training providers, building practical credentials for their next step.
Students have core program requirements, while projects, additional credentials and pathway activities can be shaped around their interests, goals and progress.
Depending on the student's plan and availability, work experience, volunteering, industry activities and other flexible learning can strengthen their portfolio and clarify future options.
THE IDEA EXPERIENCE
How IDEA differs from school and homeschooling
IDEA combines a shared learning community with a full-time vocational program that is individually designed.
Personalised by design
Students work towards common program requirements while projects, additional experiences and pathway activities are shaped around individual interests and aspirations.
Learning in collaborative hubs
Students attend an IDEA co-learning hub in person for at least three days each week, working around peers and mentors in an adult-style environment.
Connected to the real world
Flex learning can include work experience, volunteering, training, industry projects and other activities that add meaningful evidence to the student's portfolio.
A THOUGHTFUL TRANSITION
From information session to an individual program
Every family’s transition is different. IDEA begins by helping the young person and their parent or carer understand the program, ask practical questions and explore whether the environment is the right fit.
- Attend an information session: learn how the Academy operates and what participation involves.
- Complete an application meeting: discuss the young person’s interests, goals, current learning situation and support needs.
- Co-design the starting plan: agree on initial goals, qualifications, routines and pathway priorities.
- Begin with support: mentors help the student settle into the hub, community and project rhythm.
IDEA is not a registered school and does not provide an ATAR or WACE. Families should discuss eligibility, participation requirements and the intended future pathway with the IDEA team before enrolling.
