A DIFFERENT START TO THE SENIOR YEARS

A Year 10 Alternative in Perth for Teens

Year 10 doesn’t have to look like another year of traditional classroom learning. IDEA offers a full-time Year 10 alternative in Perth where young people can reset, explore their interests, build confidence and develop practical skills through vocational qualifications, personalised projects, mentoring and real-world learning.
MORE THAN ONE WAY TO DO YEAR 10

When mainstream Year 10 isn't the right fit

For many young people, Year 10 is an important turning point.

It is the stage when conversations about Years 11 and 12, ATAR, careers and life after school begin to feel more serious. But not every teenager thrives in a traditional environment built around fixed subjects, conventional classrooms and the same pathway for everyone.

Sometimes a young person needs something different.

They may be highly creative or practical. They may learn best by doing. They may have interests they want to explore more deeply, or they may simply be ready for greater independence and a clearer connection between what they are learning and the world beyond education.

A different Year 10 doesn’t mean lowering expectations.

At IDEA, Year 10 — known as Rookie Year — is designed as a period to recalibrate, make connections, explore possibilities and develop the foundations students need for the senior secondary years ahead.

What can a Year 10 alternative include?

Young people do not all learn in the same way or become interested in the same things.

IDEA gives students opportunities to work on projects connected to their interests while developing transferable skills such as planning, communication, problem-solving, creativity, collaboration and self-management.

On co-learning days, project sprints form a major part of the learning experience. Students identify what they will work on, set goals and learn to take increasing ownership of their progress.

Rookie Year combines personalised learning with practical vocational education.

Year 10 students typically work towards:

  • BSB20120 Certificate II in Workplace Skills
  • ICT20120 Certificate II in Applied Digital Technologies

Additional qualifications, courses and experiences may be incorporated depending on the student's interests and future goals. IDEA states that the Workplace Skills qualification is delivered in partnership with NUA Learn and the Applied Digital Technologies qualification through Skills Strategies International.

This gives students an opportunity to start building recognised credentials while developing skills they can apply beyond the classroom.

Year 10 should prepare young people for more than the next assessment.

Rookie Year gives students opportunities to develop confidence, make decisions, take appropriate risks and become more comfortable stepping outside their comfort zone.

Students gradually take greater responsibility for setting goals, managing their time, completing projects and asking for help when they need it.

IDEA's team meetings and coaching model also develops practical skills such as scheduling, task prioritisation, follow-up, feedback and project management.

Students don't have to figure everything out alone.

One-on-one coaching with IDEA mentors can cover portfolio progress, wellbeing and future pathway planning.

Rather than expecting a Year 10 student to already know exactly what career they want, mentoring helps them explore possibilities, recognise strengths and begin connecting their interests with future opportunities.

Learning at IDEA is not designed to stay within four walls.

As students progress, personalised flex-learning opportunities can connect their education with experiences such as industry projects, volunteering, job shadowing, work experience, workshops, events, additional credentials and other activities relevant to their interests.

For a Year 10 student, these experiences can help answer an important question:

“What am I interested in, and where could it take me?”

OPTIONS AFTER ROOKIE YEAR

Where can a Year 10 alternative lead?

It is the first stage of a broader three-year journey designed to move students from exploration towards increasing independence, experience and a clear pathway beyond IDEA.

Continue into Year 11 at IDEA

Students who continue into IDEA's Intern Year begin connecting their skills, talents and interests more directly with possible careers. They explore career clusters, build their resume, develop a digital portfolio and can participate in work placements, volunteering, networking and relevant micro-credentials. Intern students typically work towards a BSB30120 Certificate III in Business as part of the program.

Vocational and further training pathways

For students drawn towards practical or industry-specific learning, their developing interests may lead towards TAFE, additional vocational qualifications, apprenticeships, traineeships or specialist training. IDEA's model allows students to explore these possibilities progressively rather than waiting until the end of Year 12 to start thinking about them.

University, work or enterprise

A different Year 10 does not mean limiting future ambitions. Across the IDEA journey, students can build qualifications, projects, work experience, professional networks and a digital portfolio while investigating pathways towards university, further training, employment or entrepreneurship. By Graduate Year, IDEA students focus more deliberately on transition planning and typically work towards a Certificate IV in Business, with personalised experiences added according to their goals. The destination is not predetermined in Year 10. The goal is to start discovering it.

HOW IDEA SUPPORTS THE TRANSITION

A Year 10 program built around exploration and growth

IDEA is a full-time vocational alternative to mainstream secondary schooling for young people in their senior secondary years. Rather than offering WACE or an ATAR, IDEA combines nationally recognised vocational qualifications with project-based learning, individual coaching, portfolio development and real-world experiences.

Rookie Year focuses on helping students build strong foundations through Certificate II qualifications, personalised projects, mentoring, goal setting, creative problem-solving, digital and workplace skills, masterclasses and career exploration.

Students take part in co-learning days alongside flexible learning opportunities such as industry projects, work experience, volunteering and training.

For students considering leaving school during Year 10, Western Australian participation and exemption requirements may apply. IDEA supports enrolled families in navigating these arrangements.

Rookie Year gives young people an opportunity to rebuild confidence, discover what motivates them and develop practical skills for a meaningful future.
